New Records in Terms of VM Performance, Responsiveness, and Scalability

During MMS, 400 instructor-led lab seats with more than 2000 simultaneous virtual machines were provisioned in less than seven minutes, every 90 minutes, without any degradation, every day for five days. Over the course of the week:

  • 48,589 virtual machines were provisioned
  • 15,759 individual labs sessions supported
  • Maximum number of concurrent virtual machines achieved on the 32 node cluster:  8,312, ~260 VMs per blade server
  • Averaging 70-100 server-class virtual machines per blade server – with microsecond access latency
  • Consolidated 570 servers down to just 32 servers:  dramatic savings in power and cooling, smaller footprint
  • Each of the 32 HP ProLiant BL460c Gen8 blade servers in the ‘HP Cloud Solution for Microsoft’ were configured with a 785GB or 1.2TB HP IO Accelerator mezzanine card
  • With each IO Accelerator delivering about 250,000 IOPS, aggregate system performance capability reaches 8 million IOPS
  • With each IO Accelerator delivering 1.5 GB/s bandwidth, system throughput capability is 48 GB/s
  • Each IO Accelerator makes it possible to host more and larger virtual machines per blade server, per core

Microsoft and Treasury

Love the stats in this brief article.

http://www.treasuryandrisk.com/2012/10/15/microsoft-wins-aha-gold-in-working-capital?t=corporate-finance&ref=hp

“Microsoft takes great pride in running a centralized treasury for its more than 350 legal entities in 118 countries, which have over 1,100 bank accounts at more than 100 banks worldwide. Unlike many companies that forecast operating expenses by regional operating centers, the $70 billion technology company requires its more than 200 subsidiaries to forecast anticipated expenses every month. The result: net variances—forecast to reality—of 20% to 30%”
